Description: Records of Milwaukee (Wis.) chapter of national organization of Civil War officers and their descendents instituted in 1865 to preserve the memories of the Civil War. Records include constitution, rosters, programs, invitations, newsletters and magazines, pamphlets on campaigns, newspaper clippings, minutes of meetings, circulars primarily from the Wisconsin Commandery and the Commandery-in-Chief, and photographs of members with alphabetical index. Of special interest are original letters from William Tecumseh Sherman and Winfield Scott Hancock. Also of special interest are memorial brochures giving the deceased member's military and personal history (alphabetical index available).

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance.
